There's no such thing as a reliable car model. There are reliable model-years.
The same nameplate that earns a "most reliable" badge one year can hide a transmission that fails at 80,000 miles the next. The engine gets revised. A supplier changes. A cost-saving part slips into the build. If you shop by reputation alone — "Hondas last forever," "stay away from anything German" — you'll walk right past the specific years that cost their owners thousands.
This is a list of 15 of the clearest examples: model-years where the problem is well documented, usually acknowledged by the manufacturer through a recall, an extended warranty, or a class-action settlement, and expensive enough to matter. For each one we've noted which years are affected, what tends to break, what owners have paid, and what to buy instead.
A bad model-year doesn't always mean a bad model. Sometimes the very next year fixed it. Sometimes a specific car on this list has already had the recall work done and the updated part fitted, which changes everything.
So use this as a filter, not a verdict:
A known-bad year with the fix done, a clean inspection, and a discounted price can still be a smart buy. Finding out about the problem after you own the car is the part you want to avoid.
The DPS6 "PowerShift" automatic. Ford took a dual-clutch gearbox — a design that normally belongs in performance cars and normally runs a wet clutch — and fitted a dry clutch version to two economy cars to save fuel. The result shudders pulling away from a stop, hesitates when you ask for power, and clunks between gears.
Ford issued close to twenty technical service bulletins, extended the clutch and control-module warranty to 7 years / 100,000 miles, and settled a class action (Vargas v. Ford). Plenty of owners went through two or three clutch packs. Even a repaired car often still shudders.
Buy instead: Mazda 3 (2014+), Honda Fit (2015+), Toyota Corolla (2014+) — all conventional automatics.
Ford Focus reliability report · Ford Fiesta reliability report
Nissan's Jatco CVT. Owners report whining, shuddering, overheating into highway "limp mode," and outright failure — often between 60,000 and 110,000 miles. A replacement runs $3,000–$5,000, frequently more than the car is worth by then. Nissan extended the CVT warranty to 84 months / 84,000 miles on many of these, which tells you how often it came up. The Versa and Pathfinder used related units.
Buy instead: Toyota Corolla or Camry, Honda Civic or Accord, Mazda 3 or 6. Toyota's and Honda's CVTs (and Honda's conventional automatics) have held up far better.
Nissan Altima reliability report · Nissan Rogue reliability report
The ZF nine-speed automatic, launched before it was sorted. Harsh and confused shifts, hesitation pulling into traffic, occasional stalling. Multiple software reflashes; some cars needed a replacement transmission. The 2017 refresh calmed it down but didn't erase it.
Buy instead: Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5.
Jeep Cherokee reliability report
Sonata, Optima, Santa Fe Sport, Sorento, Tucson. Metal debris left in the block during machining starves the rod bearings of oil; a bearing spins, the engine knocks, then seizes — in some cases with a fire.
This became one of the largest engine sagas in modern history: multiple recalls (2015, 2017, and after), a class-action settlement spanning roughly 2011–2019 across several models, lifetime short-block warranties on covered cars, and a "knock sensor detection system" software update that shuts the engine down early if it senses bearing wear.
Before buying any of these, check the VIN against Hyundai's or Kia's recall lookup and confirm the recall work — ideally including the knock-sensor update — is done.
Buy instead: a Camry or Accord four-cylinder, or a 2016-or-newer Hyundai/Kia with the revised engines.

Two problems, back to back. The 2010–2012 cars with the older EJ25 engine leak oil and coolant from the head gaskets, usually around 90,000–130,000 miles — a $1,500–$2,500 job because the engine has to come partway out. Subaru switched to the FB25 engine for 2013, which traded the head-gasket leak for high oil consumption, bad enough that Subaru settled a class action and extended warranties on 2011–2015 models.
Buy instead: a 2016-or-newer Outback or Forester (still do an oil-consumption check on the test drive and ask for records), or a Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, or Honda CR-V.

Honda's 1.5-litre turbo dilutes its own oil with gasoline, mostly in cold climates and on short trips. You'll see the oil level rise on the dipstick and smell fuel. Honda issued service bulletins, a software update to the warm-up strategy, and extended the powertrain warranty in cold-weather states. It's rarely catastrophic, but on these years it never fully went away.
Buy instead: a Civic with the 2.0-litre non-turbo engine (base trims, Sport, and Si), a Toyota Corolla, or a Mazda 3 2.5.
Honda Civic reliability report · Honda CR-V reliability report
Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche. The cylinder-deactivation system burns oil through the lifters and valve covers — enough that owners top off between changes — and the AFM lifters themselves collapse, causing a dead misfire and, if ignored, camshaft damage. A lifter-and-cam job is $2,500–$4,500. Many owners fit an "AFM delete" so it doesn't happen twice. (The 2014–2018 trucks largely fixed the oil burn but added a failure-prone A/C condenser.)
Buy instead: a Toyota Tundra 5.7 (2007+), a Honda Ridgeline, or an F-150 with the 5.0 V8 (2011+).
Chevrolet Silverado reliability report · Chevrolet Tahoe reliability report
The Italian-built VM Motori V6 diesel. EGR coolers crack, the oil cooler fails, and the engine family was caught in an emissions settlement that forced a recall and software changes some owners say hurt drivability. Out of warranty, a cracked EGR cooler or cylinder head runs into four figures quickly.
Buy instead: a Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi (listen for a lifter "tick" on cold start), an F-150 5.0, or a 2020-or-newer EcoDiesel — the third-generation version is markedly better.
Three separate issues. Exhaust fumes, including carbon monoxide, leak into the cabin — the subject of an NHTSA investigation and years of complaints. The power transfer unit (PTU) on all-wheel-drive models runs hot, has no factory drain plug or service interval, and often fails around 100,000 miles. And the 3.5L V6's water pump sits inside the engine, driven by the timing chain; when it fails it dumps coolant into the oil — a $1,500–$3,000 repair.
Buy instead: a Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot (2016+), Mazda CX-9 (2016+), or Kia Telluride.
Ford Explorer reliability report
The Totally Integrated Power Module — the main fuse-and-relay box — fails in ways that feel haunted: no-start, stalling while driving, the fuel pump running with the key off, wipers or horn acting on their own. A replacement is $1,000 or more. The early 3.6 Pentastar V6 in these years also had a left-bank cylinder-head failure, and the air suspension (on equipped models) is a further expensive weak point.
Buy instead: a Toyota 4Runner or Toyota Highlander.
Jeep Grand Cherokee reliability report
The EA888 engine's timing-chain tensioner can fail and let the chain skip. On an interference engine that means bent valves and, at worst, a new engine — $5,000 or more. It's usually preceded by a rattle on cold start. These engines also build carbon on the intake valves and run a plastic water pump that cracks. VW extended the tensioner warranty after enough failures.
Buy instead: a Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, or Toyota RAV4. The 2018-and-newer Tiguan uses a different, more durable engine.

A known-bad model-year isn't always a dealbreaker. A well-kept one with the recall work done and a clean inspection can be a smart buy — often at a discount, because the reputation scares everyone else off. What you don't want is to learn about the problem from your own repair bill.
